The Rehabilitation

On July 18, 2011, three days after Jeffrey Epstein was formally registered as a visitor at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation headquarters in Seattle, a Stanford professor named Stephen Kosslyn emailed Epstein two scripts.1

One script was for Epstein. The other was for Bill Gates — talking points to use with reporters. The Gates script read: "The Gates Foundation is dedicated to making the world a better place. To accomplish this mission we need the best possible financial advice we can obtain. Jeffrey Epstein has unquestioned financial expertise. We realize that Jeffrey has made mistakes in the past. But he's paid his debt to society by being incarcerated; He is resolved to making up for his past mistakes by contributing to society; We are comfortable giving him a chance to redeem himself; everyone deserves a second chance."1

Kosslyn added a personal note: "Great to see you last night! Thanks again for getting us invited."1

This was not an awkward dinner that became public. This was a coordinated, scripted strategy to rehabilitate a convicted sex offender's public image — and the co-founder of Microsoft had agreed to be its public face.

The Visitor Badge

Three days before the Kosslyn scripts, on July 15, 2011, the Gates Foundation's official visitor management system generated an automated email: "Dear Jeffrey Epstein, You have been registered as a visitor to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on 07/15/11, starting at 3:30PM."2 The address: 500 5th Avenue North, Seattle — the headquarters of the world's largest private foundation.

Jeffrey Epstein had pleaded guilty to procuring a minor for prostitution in 2008. He had served thirteen months. He was a registered sex offender. And now he had a visitor badge to the Gates Foundation.

This was not an oversight. Institutional visitor registrations require sponsorship — someone inside the organization authorized the visit, entered Epstein's name into the system, and set his appointment time. The EFTA corpus also documents Epstein's contacts with the Foundation's Chief Financial Officer, Richard Henriques3, and a scheduled call with the General Counsel in July 2014.4

The Trophy Wall

On January 9, 2012, Epstein emailed Tom Barrack with a question about interior decoration: "IN the dining room there are photos of Bill Gates with Larry Summers taken at the house the other day, should I have someone take them down. or is he ok with competition."5

Photos of the world's richest man, taken at a convicted sex offender's Manhattan townhouse, hanging in the dining room. The question was not whether the photos should exist. It was whether another billionaire guest might feel competitive.

The photos had been taken at one of at least six documented dinners Gates attended at Epstein's townhouse between January 2011 and September 2014. The EFTA corpus records the cadence:

• January 31 and February 1, 2011: Two consecutive nights. Lesley Groff's schedule shows "7:30 DINNER WITH BILL GATES AND BORIS NIKOLIC" the first night, with former UK cabinet minister Peter Mandelson joining the second.6

• May 2, 2011: The dinner that became publicly known. Gates, Summers, and Jes Staley — then head of JPMorgan's investment bank. Groff's assessment: "Power dinner!!"7

• September 2013: "7:30 BILL & Melinda GATES to arrive the house. 8:00pm DINNER: Bill, Melinda, Terje, Jagbland, JE. Larry & Lisa Summers are invited."8 Melinda Gates herself, at Epstein's table.

Between the dinners, Gates stayed at Epstein's Paris apartment at least twice — in March and June 2013. "Will have bill gates staying with me in paris," Epstein wrote to contacts, arranging introductions to European industrialists and diplomats during the visits.9

The Intermediary

Boris Nikolic served as "Chief Advisor for Science and Technology to Bill Gates at bgC3 (the private office of Bill Gates) and at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation."10 He was the primary channel between Gates and Epstein — and Epstein managed him accordingly.

In February 2011, Epstein coached Nikolic on job titles within Gates's organization, suggesting: "president Bill Gates investments.. president Bill Gates Interests."10 Epstein was not just socializing with Gates's advisor. He was shaping the advisor's career trajectory.

The relationship deepened into the summer of 2013, when Gates fired Nikolic. What followed was extraordinary: Gates authorized Epstein to negotiate Nikolic's severance.

"Larry Cohen is authorized to talk to you about the employment issues with Boris," Gates emailed Epstein directly.11 Larry Cohen was Gates's personal lawyer and chief of staff at bgC3. Gates was delegating a sensitive personnel matter — the termination of his chief science advisor — to a convicted sex offender.

Epstein took to the task with characteristic thoroughness. In a subsequent email to Cohen, he raised eight detailed negotiation points, including one that revealed the depth of his knowledge of Gates's private life: "If Melinda wants a divorce, how does Boris protect himself."11

The Name

Epstein did not simply befriend Gates. He weaponized the association.

In April 2011, Epstein emailed ME Karim Wade, the son of Senegal's president: "Gates has asked me to do it.. he is coming on Monday the 2nd."12 In September 2012, he wrote to a New York Times financial correspondent: "bill gates and I, are going to convene some very small gatherings on new solutions for the financial distress. who would you suggest, out of the box."13 In October 2012, he described Nikolic as "boris (bill gates person)" while arranging meetings with Moscow city officials.13

Whether Gates knew Epstein was using his name this way is unclear. What is clear is the pattern: Epstein leveraged the Gates association to open doors with foreign leaders, recruit attendees for his own events, and position himself as a serious financial player — all three years after his conviction for soliciting a minor.

In January 2012, after Gates Foundation Global Health staffer Jenna Mulhall-Brereton attended a meeting at Epstein's home, Epstein instructed his staff to follow up with her — using the Foundation contact to discuss Ivory Coast development.14 The visit had generated a rolodex entry.

The Donor Advised Fund

The relationship had a financial architecture. For over three years, Gates and Epstein collaborated on a Donor Advised Fund — a tax-advantaged charitable vehicle that became the primary business nexus between them.

The DAF discussions began no later than February 2011, when Epstein told Summers: "I talked to Staley regarding the Donor advised fund. You and I are invited to Scene to spend serious time with Bill Gates."15 In December 2011, Epstein associate Ian Osborne traveled to Epstein's private island to discuss "Gates donor advised funds."15

By 2013, Epstein was leveraging the DAF to discuss vast sums: "Rothschild estimated there was over 10 billion in art alone that would only get tax benefits if donated to a DAF as opposed to private foundations."15 In April 2014, Gates wrote: "I meet on the DAF on April 29."15

In September 2013, the philanthropic collaboration took a more personal turn. Epstein emailed Gates: "Boris told me of your kind offer to donate money in my name---- a. thank you, lets discuss b. my giving is always anonymous, c. my interests are in smart people and breast cancer."16

Gates had offered to make a charitable donation in Epstein's name. It was reputation laundering through philanthropy — using the Gates Foundation's credibility to rehabilitate a sex offender's public image.

The Script and the System

The Kosslyn scripts document transforms the Gates-Epstein relationship from an embarrassing social lapse into something more structurally significant.

Michael Wolff, the journalist, noted in an email found in the corpus: "It is Bill Gates who at the end of the summer began prodding Epstein to begin a process of public rehabilitation."17 Gates did not merely tolerate Epstein. According to this account, he catalyzed the rehabilitation itself.

The PR scripts were one instrument. The Gates Foundation visitor badge was another. The dining room photos were social proof. The DAF collaboration was a financial framework. The name-dropping was access. The donation offer was cover. Each element served the same function: converting the credibility of the world's most prominent philanthropist into a shield for a convicted sex offender.

Whether Gates understood the full scope of what Epstein was doing with the relationship is an open question. The Kosslyn scripts prove Gates knew what the relationship looked like — that is what the scripts were for. The institutional visitor registration proves Gates's organization knew who was visiting. The Nikolic severance proves Gates trusted Epstein with sensitive personnel matters. And the donation offer proves Gates was willing to put his own philanthropic brand behind Epstein's name.

The EFTA corpus does not contain evidence that Gates was aware of Epstein's ongoing criminal conduct. What it documents is something different: a four-year, institutionally integrated relationship that provided a convicted sex offender with exactly the social rehabilitation he needed — access, credibility, and cover.
